Buckles
With few exceptions, nearly every webbing project will require a fastener of some kind. Buckles are almost always the right choice! Plastic and metal quick-release buckles are used for dog collars, belts, harnesses, backpacks, and hundreds of other projects. Country Brook Design® carries top buckle brands, such as YKK and National Molding, manufacturers of many types of top-quality fasteners. In addition, we offer several economy options for low-cost or low-tensile strength projects.
The one-handed action of a side-release buckle will complete your webbing project with a graceful design element, incredible strength, and ruggedness. Whether you work with nylon, polyester, polypropylene, or cotton webbing, you can count on a quick-release buckle to keep your strap securely fastened.
Side Release Buckles
The side release buckle is a modern fastening device designed for quick, secure connections and easy release, often used in a wide range of applications like outdoor gear, luggage, and safety equipment. It is named for its side-release mechanism, where pressing tabs on either side of the buckle allows the connection to disengage.
Design and Mechanism
The side release buckle consists of two interlocking parts:
- Male End: A flat, tapered section with two flexible prongs or tabs that click into place when inserted.
- Female End: A housing designed to receive the male end and securely hold it until the tabs are pressed to release the connection.
This intuitive design allows for:
- One-handed operation (connection and release)
- A "click" sound for tactile and audible confirmation of secure fastening
- High load-bearing strength, particularly for static loads
Materials like polyoxymethylene (POM) or reinforced nylon are commonly used, providing resistance to UV rays, moisture, and impact. Metal versions are also available for heavy-duty or aesthetic applications.

Flat vs. Contoured?
Side-release buckles are generally sold as either Flats or Contoured. What's the difference?
- Contoured Buckles have an angled or curved side profile. It's designed to fit rounded shapes better. For example, a dog collar is much more comfortable using a contoured buckle because it conforms around the neck better than a flat buckle would.
- Flat Buckles look straight from the side profile. They're a better fit for projects where the buckle will lay against a flat object. For example, a flat buckle would better serve a strap that secures a box or cooler.
