Sewing nylon webbing together properly matters for projects like dog collars, backpacks, and camping gear, where a weak seam can lead to real failure. Use heavy duty scissors for a clean cut, then heat seal the edges with a lighter to keep the fibers from fraying, and allow adequate overlap, at least 3 inches per end, more for heavy load applications.
For materials, heavy duty bonded nylon thread, such as size B69, works best, and an industrial or heavy duty sewing machine is preferred, though a home machine can work fine with the right needle. Avoid simple straight stitches, since they concentrate stress in one line, a box and X pattern distributes tension evenly and helps prevent seam failure over time.
Poor seams create weak points that can fail unexpectedly, especially in slings, seat belts, lifting devices, or pet products, so avoid insufficient overlap, skipped reinforcement, improper sealing, and mismatched thread.
